This is a model of a northern waka taua with a tuere that has a two dimensional pattern of intertwined figures that represent tuna (eels). The traditional piereced carving is visually imposing and reflects the traditional use of piereced carving which creates a lighter, faster war canoe that is striking and visually intimidating.
This piece was carved from Totara, milled from trees that had been accidentally felled on a local northland farm which were then donated for carving. The whare waka was make out of manuka and brushstick.
